A journalist with Muslim TV, MTA International, has been killed after he was attacked by an unknown armed men in Northern Ghana, police and local media reported, Saturday.
Syed Taalay Ahmed Sahib and two other victims were travelling on the Tamale-Buipe road, when their Toyota Hiace vehicle with registration number GT 7405-16 was attacked between Mpaha junction and Sarikyekura on the Buipe-Tamale Highway on Monday, August 23, around 6:50 pm.
“On reaching a section of the road at Sarikyekura, a number of armed men suddenly emerged from the bush and opened fire at the vehicle, deflating some of the vehicle’s tyres in the process and forcing the vehicle to stop. Some of the bullets penetrated the vehicle and hit the two, who sustained gunshot wounds in the process. The armed men then robbed them of their mobile phones and unspecified amount of money and fled,” a police report quoted by CNR said.
The armed men had fled the scene when a police patrol team was dispatched to the scene, the report said. It is gathered that the armed men made away with some personal effects and an unspecified amount of money during the raid.
The victims were rushed to the Buipe Polyclinic by the police and later referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital but Taalay Ahmed was pronounced dead. The team had travelled to Ghana for some documentary work up North.
Taalay’s employers, MTA News has since confirmed the incident in a tweet describing the late Taalay as “devoted” and “sincere”.
“As many are now aware, earlier this week a most devoted and sincere member of our MTA News team, Syed Taalay Ahmed Sahib, lost his life whilst travelling abroad in Ghana on duty in the service of Islam”, MTA News stated.
Tributes have been pouring in as the death of the journalist has shocked many, especially Muslim worshippers around the world.
No arrest has been made as the Ghana Police Service says it is investigating the incident.
