Director at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at the Ghana Police Service Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr. Alexander Obeng has remained the number of deaths recorded as a result of motor accidents.
He indicated the situation was worrying, alarming and must be checked to prevent further such deaths.
The Korle-bu Teaching Hospital has raised concern over the increasing rate in motor accidents.
The facility says the number of deaths recorded over this year was alarming.
Fifty-nine people died out of 2,563 accidents involving motorcycles popularly known as “okada” within the last two-and -half- years at the Korle Bu Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit.
The facility noted that victims of such accidents mostly recorded within the Greater Accra Region, involved young adults from ages 18 to 37, with deaths so far being all males in such age brackets.
Majority of the deaths resulted from severe head injury, with a few others from cervical spine injuries, and polytrauma (multiple injuries resulting from an accident).
He spoke against indiscipline, overspending on our roads and disregard for road regulations.
Commenting on the issue the MTTD Director said motor riders must obey road regulations to avoid road crashes this festive season.
He said motor riders should see themselves as vulnerable so they will stay alive.
He also advised commercial drivers to obey road regulations.
The lives of passengers he noted are important and their contribution to national development was crucial hence the need for drivers to drive with caution.
