Journalist Dr Randy Abbey, has rejected a request by government to contribute to the construction of a National Cathedral. According to the veteran journalist, he cannot contribute to fulfill a personal vow made by President Akufo-Addo to God while campaigning to be President.

While presenting the Mid-year budget in Parliament on Thursday July 29, 2021, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, pleaded with Ghanaians, to contribute GHc100 each every month, to make the intention to construct a National Cathedral a reality.

“Work on the National Cathedral is progressing speedily and following the programme of the contractor. The National Cathedral is expected to be officially commissioned on March 6, 2024.

Upon completion, the National Cathedral will provide a space for formal religious activities of state and sympathize the enormous contribution of faith to nation-building”, he said in the budget reading.

He continued “This state and church partnership envisaged by the president to develop the National Cathedral is on course. An initiative; the GHc100 a month also dubbed “Ketoa Biaa Nsua” will be launched by the trustees of the National Cathedral on August 12, 2021, to give as many Ghanaians as possible the opportunity to be part of the history of the National Cathedral”.

Interestingly, the request has been received with mixed reactions from many Ghanaians. While some say they will contribute their widow’s mite to the project because it is for a good course, many others have said they will not contribute.

One of such persons is Metro television’s Good Morning progamme host Dr Abbey, who has said in plain language that he will not contribute.

On his show on Friday the experienced television host made it clear “I will not pay……

My understanding is that this is the President’s personal vow to God that, if he made him win the elections, he will build a cathedral. How do I pay money to help somebody redeem his vow to God?

My church also has a lot of commitments so I have to support them”.
