Many Ghanaians have commended the National Chief Imam of Ghana, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, for taking a bold step to promote interfaith tolerance as he joined Christians at Christ the King Parish of the Catholic Church in Accra on Easter Sunday, ahead of the celebration on his 100th birthday celebration today.
According to reports, the congregants at the Easter Service were ‘pleasantly surprised’ when the Parish Priest, the Reverend Father Andrew Campbell, welcomed the National Chief Imam and his large entourage.
Rev Father Andrew Campbell presented Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu with a bouquet of flowers and gifts to mark his centennial celebrations.
The National Chief Imam used the occasion to appeal for peace in Ghana, as well as religious tolerance.
On social media, where the pictures of the event have gone viral, many have invariably said the gesture would boost the highly commendable peaceful co-existence between Ghanaian Christians and their Muslim counterparts.
Dr Bawumia joins National Chief Imam to thank Allah
Earlier on Friday, Vice-President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia joined the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, and fellow Muslims at the Central Mosque in Abossey Okai for Jummah prayers and a special thanksgiving prayer.
The special thanksgiving prayer was to thank the Almighty Allah for the blessings He has bestowed on the National Chief Imam, who turns 100 today.
After the congregational Jummah prayer, the Chief Imam led the thanksgiving duas, and gave glory to the Almighty for his life, as well as the peace He has continued to grant the people of Ghana. He also prayed for the prosperity of Ghana, as well as for Allah to grant the leadership of this country, especially President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Bawumia, more wisdom to steer the affairs of the country.
The congregation, including the Vice-President Bawumia, thanked Allah for granting the Chief Imam long life, good health and wisdom.
They also prayed for Allah to continue to grant Sheikh Sharubutu good health so that the country would continue to benefit from his invaluable advice and guidance.
The thanksgiving prayer formally starts a series of programmes lined up for the commemoration of the centenary birthday celebration of the National Chief Imam.
This morning, a public lecture will be held in his honour in Accra, and the keynote speaker will be Dr Mohammed Ibn-Chambas, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel.
