NDC Cadres Meeting at Tema: Organizers offer explanation to Party Chairman

Organizers of the forum in Tema where some leading members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had made some statements that have since generated controversy in the media have written to the Chairman of the party to explain matters.

According to the 21st April letter to Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the Democratic Platform Initiative is meant to provide a national forum for the party’s base to discuss and contribute inputs into the policy direction of the party.

Signed by Comrades Antwi Boasiako Sekyere of the Cadres and NDC Activists (CANA), Oliver Agbenyo of the United Cadres Front (UCF), Kodzo Gavua of the Progressive Intellectuals (PI) and Kyeretwie Opoku of Organising for Ghana (OfG), the letter had been attached with a Communique from the Forum.

“As you will see from the above, our intention is solely to help the Party confront its structural problems. We do not seek to attack any individual office holder. We are all collectively responsible for the current situation and for correcting it,” the letter said.

As it had come at the same time that the Executive leadership of the party was holding a retreat in Ho, Volta Region, the forum has been interpreted as a counter to the Ho retreat.

Speakers, including former Trade Minister, Dan Abodakpi and former Defense Minister, Ben Kumbuor have also have been accused of using the forum to disparage the leadership of the party, especially the 2021 Flagbearer of the party.

Mr. Abodakpi’s analysis that the NDC is now an elephant standing on clay feet and Dr. Kumbuor’s admonishment that the party is now a sick horse that must be cured have been seen as shades at former President Mahama.

However, according to the Communique attached to the letter, those thinking that way are sorely mistaken.

“Most of the feedback has been positive. We have also received constructive criticisms, which we have taken to heart and which will inform future events. There have been some unfortunate angry reactions. We, of course, would never respond in kind. That is not the kind of Party we hope to serve,” the statement read.

The letter praised the announcement from the retreat in Ho that a roadmap for the party’s reorganization will soon be released, saying the Democratic Platform Initiative will be sending input.

“We are also working on a set of reorganization proposals for discussion at future forums. Given that things now seem to be moving to convergence, we will publish an interim proposal next week,” the forum wrote.
