NDC Cries over Ampofo’s trial; wants President’s intervention

Members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have decried the trial of the party’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, over a leaked tape containing words believed to be the voice of the chairman with some other unknown party members allegedly plotting to abuse the credibility of the government of Ghana.

With what seems to be a call for the intervention of the president, Mr. Alex Segbefia,  a former Minister of Health, who spoke at the National Delegate Conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Accra, noted that the party was so much concerned about what appears to be the constant harassment of its National Chairman.

“The NDC is very much concerned about the deliberate harassment of its national chairman and we called on the president to look into the matter,” Mr. Segbefia said.

Earlier this year, the opposition party’s chairman was invited by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service over a leaked tape. His failure to honor the police invitation led to his Rambo-style arrest and subsequently hauled before court for trial.

Good Will message

Giving the goodwill message on behalf of the NDC at the NPP’s national conference, Mr. Segbefia indicated that such goodwill political parties’ messages have become conventional to events like this and it allows political parties to disseminate and extend proper message to the electorates.

He called for politics of ideas and not propaganda to discredit the achievements of other political parties and noted that it was necessary for political parties to educate electorates that they are not at war.

He preached peace and unity saying “our common fight is against poverty, corruption and amongst others in the society to elevate poverty and bring accountability into the country’s body politics.”

He lamented that it was regrettable to witness that teachers’ nurses, bankers, market women are suffering and there was the need to address those issues.

Salute

He noted that the NDC, led by John Dramani Mahama, salutes the NPP for hosting the delegates conference but was optimistic that their government will be evicted from the Jubilee House come the 2020 general election.

Good performance

Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, General Secretary of the National Democratic Party (NDP) who led the delegation of his party also eulogized the president and said the president’s commitment to initiate a referendum to amend the article 55(3) would have been a good opportunity for minor political parties to ginger their base.

He stated that the implementation of the Free SHS has curbed a lot of children from the streets and reduced financial stress of parent scoring the performance of the ruling NPP government 75 per cent since inceptions of power some three years ago.
