Malik Basintale, Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly criticized the selection of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, as the running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Basintale described the decision as uninspiring and unlikely to bolster the NPP’s electoral prospects.

In an interview on Eyewitness News, Basintale voiced his disapproval of NAPO’s track record, particularly citing his tenures as Minister of Education and Minister of Energy, which he characterized as marked by poor performance.

“He is not a viable candidate. He brings nothing on board. I have repeatedly said he is the last nail to hit the casket. If you tie a donkey cart to a dead donkey, he cannot go to Savelugu; he will continue to be in Accra,” Basintale remarked critically.

The choice of NAPO as running mate was endorsed by the majority caucus in Parliament and NPP executives. Dr. Bawumia is expected to defend this decision before the National Council (NEC) of the NPP. The NEC meeting, scheduled for Thursday, July 4, will provide a platform for Dr. Bawumia to explain why he believes Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is the best fit for the role.
