The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to publicly apologize to Ghanaians over what they describe as a “bloated” voter’s register. The NDC claims that errors in the register could undermine the integrity of upcoming elections and risk disenfranchising many eligible voters.
At a recent press conference in Accra, the EC admitted responsibility for the inflated voter numbers in the Ejumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency, explaining that the issue arose from an error. The NDC had earlier accused the EC of colluding with the ruling NPP to inflate the register by over 3,000 voters. However, Deputy Chairman of the EC, Dr. Bossman Asare, clarified that the inflated figures were due to the inadvertent inclusion of voter transfer lists from 2020 and 2023.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Dr. Tanko Rashid-Computer, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, expressed a lack of trust in the EC’s internal investigations and called for an external audit. He also emphasized the need for the EC to apologize to the public, stating, “We don’t trust their internal investigation. We are calling for an external body to audit them because this EC cannot be trusted in even handling their own data.”
