The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused Brigadier-General Michael Opoku, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, of masterminding a scheme to rig the upcoming December 7 general elections in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). This explosive revelation was made during a press conference addressed by NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi.

The NDC alleges that Brigadier-General Opoku, known for his controversial role in the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections, has been entrusted with executing clandestine activities, including ballot stuffing and voter intimidation, particularly in the Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the NPP.

Sammy Gyamfi highlighted Brigadier-General Opoku’s involvement in the violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections, where masked security operatives attacked civilians. As then-Director of Operations at the National Security Secretariat, Opoku admitted before the Emile Short Commission that he authorized the actions of the operatives. Despite the Commission recommending a reprimand, President Nana Akufo-Addo dismissed the findings, later promoting Opoku to his current rank.

Election Rigging Allegations

The NDC claims it has credible intelligence that Brigadier-General Opoku has relocated his family to the UK in anticipation of his role in the election plot. According to Gyamfi, Opoku is allegedly overseeing the training of NPP-affiliated thugs disguised in military uniforms, with plans to disrupt voting and intimidate NDC supporters. He is also accused of using his Kumasi residence as a storage facility for weapons, illegally-printed ballot papers, and other election materials.

“Violence cannot and will not win the NPP this year’s election,” Gyamfi declared. “We have them under our radar and will continue to monitor them with eagle eyes.”

Call to Action

The NDC has called on key security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff, to intervene and investigate the allegations. The party urged these authorities to ensure a peaceful election process, emphasizing that “elections are about counting heads, not cutting heads.”

Gyamfi also reiterated the NDC’s commitment to peaceful elections, warning that any attempt to subvert the will of the people would be met with lawful resistance. “Ghana is at a crossroads and requires an urgent reset,” he said, urging Ghanaians to choose the experienced leadership of John Dramani Mahama over what he described as the “failed experiment” of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Broader Context

The accusations come at a critical juncture as the December 7 polls approach, with tensions running high in what is expected to be a tightly contested election. The NDC’s allegations, if proven, could have significant implications for the credibility of the electoral process and Ghana’s democratic reputation.

The New Patriotic Party is yet to officially respond to these allegations.
