NDC MP vows to take galamsey to Parliament

Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Select Committee on Environment, Science, and Technology, has revealed his intention to raise the ongoing issue of illegal mining, popularly referred to as galamsey, during Parliament’s next sitting on, October 15, 2024.

Speaking in an interview on Citi News on October 7, 2024, Terlabi stated “When Parliament reconvenes, I plan to bring the issue of illegal mining to the floor. I will ensure that those responsible are made to explain why such a major issue is being neglected, the entire country is rallying against galamsey, yet this government remains silent. It seems their only focus is winning elections, which is unacceptable,” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said.

Terlabi also pointed out delays in passing the Environmental Protection Bill, which he believes would strengthen the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ability to regulate environmental matters more effectively.

According to the MP, interference from ministers has stalled the progress of this legislation.

“We’ve faced resistance from certain ministers and appointees who are hindering efforts to pass the EPA bill. This bill is essential because it grants the EPA the authority to oversee institutions that impact the environment,” he lamented.

Parliament will be resuming the 5th meeting of its 4th session at the Dome of the Accra International Conference Centre.
