NDC responds to President Akufo-Addo’s call on results declaration
However, we will make our collated results known to Ghanaians and the world ahead of the Electoral Commission, as we did during the Assin North by-election in 2023.
The Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has responded to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s recent call for political parties to refrain from declaring election results before the official count by the Electoral Commission.
In a Facebook post dated September 10, 2024, Dr. Omane Boamah stated, “Mr. President, we will not declare results ourselves.
However, we will make our collated results known to Ghanaians and the world ahead of the Electoral Commission, as we did during the Assin North by-election in 2023.
We agree that the official declaration is the responsibility of the Electoral Commission.”
He further questioned why President Akufo-Addo did not extend similar advice to the NPP’s Mac Manu in 2016, who had reportedly stated, “We’ll declare our [NPP] own election results against all odds.”
President Akufo-Addo, speaking at the Bar Conference in Kumasi on Monday, September 9, emphasized that the Electoral Commission (EC) is the only body constitutionally mandated to announce election results that reflect the will of the people.
“The EC has the role to declare election results; political parties must refrain from declaring election results,” the President cautioned.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Adukwei Mensa, has assured that the general elections will be conducted peacefully, transparently, and fairly.
