NDC Supporters Storm Cantonments Police Station to demand the release of Awutu Senya East PC

Supporters of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have stormed the Cantonments Police Station in Accra, demanding the release of their parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor.

Ms. Okunor was detained by the Ghana Police Service on Friday, June 7, following her initial arrest along with two others while traveling near the Electoral Commission Office at Ofaakor on Sunday.

A firearm was found in their vehicle, which Ms. Okunor claims is legally registered for her protection.

NDC stalwarts have roundly condemned the arrest of Naa Koryoo Okunor, demanding her immediate release.

Sammy Gyamfi, the party’s National Communication Officer, has condemned the arrest, stating that Ms. Okunor has not fired any weapon and is being unfairly targeted.

“Enough of the oppression and harassment of NDC figures by the Police Service. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!” he wrote in a statement.

He also drew comparisons to a similar incident in 2020 involving a rival party member, Hawa Koomson, who fired a gun at a registration center but was not detained.

Former President and flagbearer of the NDC John Dramani Mahama has also weighed in, warning that the arrest could “raise the political temperature” in the country.

The police have not commented on the matter, but the NDC supporters remain gathered at the police station, demanding Ms. Okunor’s release.
