The Newmont Goldcorp Akyem Mines has committed some GHC500,000 to rehabilitate some selected roads within its operation areas.
The company first provided GhC 250,000 to the Birim North District Assembly to facilitate the re-grading of the Abirem to Nkawkaw road. It later committed some additional GhC 250,000 to improve the western diversion to the Ntronang section of the New Abirem and Akyem Oda main road.
This according to the company is because they recognize the importance of good roads as a key element in promoting sustainable social and economic development of any given area, including the communities they operate.
This was revealed by the outgoing General Manager of the Akyem Mines of Newmont Goldcorp, Joep Coenen, who was speaking at the 14th annual End of Year media soiree at Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital.
CSR
He indicated that, as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Newmont Goldcorp Akyem Mines in 2019 committed some $166,000 to fund the Adausena and Hweakwea water treatment project to improve water quality and distribution within the two communities.
The company, through collaboration with Newmont Akyem Development Fund ( NAkDeF), also commenced the construction of a GhC 2.5 million vocational Training Institute to equip the youth within their catchment area with vocational and entrepreneurial skills to support sustainable community development.
Commitment to development
Mr. Coenen stated that the company is committed to remain as a catalyst for the local economic development and as responsible stewards of the environment in the coming years. He indicated that the Akyem mines will continue to work hard in the coming years to deliver exceptional economic, environmental and social development to the people and improve on their relations with its community members.
Awards
The General Manager commended his colleagues and the media for the quality of working relationship which he said, has helped the company to win various awards during the year.
He revealed that in 2019, the Akyem mines reclaimed the title of Best safe mine following the Minerals Commission’s Health Safety and Environmental Audit. Its community team also won the mine community safety brigade of the year and the company was also recognized as the second-best performer in occupational health and safety culture by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
“All these works are part of the reasons why Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) ranked the Akyem mines as 12th on the Ghana club 100 listings recognizing our corporate excellence,” the General Manager mentioned.
