NPP Criticizes NDC’s Allegations of Political Maneuvering Involving Manhyia Palace
Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, denounced Gbande’s remarks as regrettable during an interview with Citi News.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rebuffed accusations from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) suggesting attempts to politicize the revered Manhyia Palace.
Mustapha Grande, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, had insinuated that the NPP aimed to exploit the selection of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a member of the Manhyia Palace royalty, for partisan gain.
Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, denounced Gbande’s remarks as regrettable during an interview with Citi News.
“Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s lineage is indeed rooted in royalty, a fact acknowledged by the Asantehene himself,” Mohammed stated. “However, there is no basis to suggest that this implies political involvement by the Asantehene or the Manhyia Palace.”
“The Asantehene is deeply respected and has maintained a non-partisan stance throughout his reign,” Mohammed affirmed. “Participation in politics by individuals from the palace without royal titles is not unprecedented nor inappropriate.”
The controversy underscores tensions ahead of Ghana’s upcoming elections, with both parties positioning themselves amidst cultural and political sensitivities.
