Daavi Ama comes to the race with her own heft, being the only candidate who has achieved the highest national award for meritorious service – the Order of the Volta.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a fine opportunity to improve its patriarchal image by electing its first ever-female national Chairperson.

This is because a decorated thoroughbred of the party, Daavi Ama, is in the race for National Chairperson.

The 74-year-old Madam Gifty Ama Asantewaa Ayeh is the only female in the race in which six men – Prof Christopher Akumfi, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Sammy Crabbe, Akwasi Osei Adjei, as well as George Kwabena Abankwah-Yeboah – are contesting to unseat the incumbent, Freddie Blay.

Critics have said that Daavi Ama presents a fine opportunity to the ruling party to deodorize its patriarchal image and probably put a little shine on the smudging that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government has given the party.

Daavi Ama comes to the race with her own heft, being the only candidate who has achieved the highest national award for meritorious service – the Order of the Volta.

In terms of experience and contribution to the party, Daavi Ama comes loaded as a former Chairperson of the Volta Region Resource Group, a Member of the Greater Accra Council of Elders, as well as a Member of the National Council Representative for the Southern Sector.

She was once the Government Representative on the National Media Commission (NMC) and has served as the Member of the Executive Council, a Member of the District Assemblies Common Fund Credit approval, and a representative to the Electoral College for the Council of State.

During the Kufuor era, Daavi Ama was awarded the highest national award – the Order of the Volta, by President Kufuor for meritorious service to the party and country.

The NPP recently marked its 30-year anniversary, but in all the three decades that the party has been in existence, its national Chairpersons have been males – Peter Ala Adjetey, former Speaker of Parliament, Odoi Sykes, Haruna Esseku, Peter Mac Manu, Jake Okanta Obetsebi Lamptey and currently, Freddie Blay.

Critics say with the bid by Daavi Ama, the NPP has a fine opportunity to change its male lineage of Chairmen.
