Samuel Nartey George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has raised urgent alarms over the alleged secret acquisition of GhanaWeb for 1 million euros by an NPP MP.

He accuses the ruling party of using the platform as a propaganda tool, a situation that demands immediate attention ahead of upcoming elections.

In an interview on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Sam George expressed concern that GhanaWeb, once regarded for its neutrality, has transformed into an extension of the NPP’s propaganda machinery under the ownership of African Web Technologies, a company allegedly linked to the NPP.

“It is crucial for Ghanaians to understand that GhanaWeb is no longer an objective voice. It has become akin to Daily Search Light, serving as an extension of the NPP’s propaganda wing,” George asserted, highlighting the broader implications of this acquisition.

George emphasised the party’s alleged desperation to secure electoral victory by describing the acquisition as part of the NPP’s strategy to consolidate influence across sectors.

He claimed that the move reflects efforts beyond relying solely on political figures like Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Napo to bolster electoral prospects.

Providing details, George accused an NPP parliamentarian of facilitating the acquisition and appointing his wife’s brother, David Antwi, as the Managing Director of GhanaWeb after the acquisition.

These allegations underscore the ongoing concerns about media independence and impartiality in Ghana’s political landscape. As the country prepares for future elections, the importance of media independence in shaping public opinion cannot be overstated.
