NPP under Fire for Alleged Vote-Buying Tactics in Ashanti Region
The decision by a majority of Ashantis to support Kyerematen has reportedly rattled the NPP, which has traditionally enjoyed overwhelming support in the region. Residents emphasized the importance of voting for someone they perceive as not only one of their own but also more competent than other candidates in the race.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has come under intense criticism following allegations of vote-buying in the Ashanti Region ahead of the upcoming general elections. Reports suggest that the party has resorted to distributing farming inputs and other goods in a desperate bid to win votes in its traditional stronghold.
According to residents, this move comes amid growing dissatisfaction with the NPP’s performance, particularly in addressing economic hardships, poor road infrastructure, and unemployment. The discontent has reportedly led many Ashantis to throw their support behind independent presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen, a native of the region, whom they regard as a competent and business-friendly leader.
Alleged Vote-Buying Efforts
Eyewitnesses claim that distribution of goods has already begun in earnest, with specific constituency parliamentary candidates spearheading the initiative. A vehicle with registration number GC 7060-12, reportedly linked to the MP for Atwima Kwanwoma, was spotted in Daban carrying farming inputs for distribution.
Ninety-two-year-old Opanin Kwaku Antwi, a local resident, described the distribution as a clear sign of desperation. “The sharing of these things does not win elections,” he said. “I am now convinced the NPP is on its way out.”
Local Sentiments Against NPP
Many Ashanti Region residents expressed a willingness to accept the farming inputs and other supplies, viewing them as a return of their tax revenue. However, they maintained that their votes would not be swayed by such handouts.
“The NPP has worsened our situation,” said one resident. “We will vote based on the economy, our roads, housing, and jobs. Alan Kyerematen understands our challenges and has policies to improve our businesses.”
A Strategic Shift to Alan Kyerematen
The decision by a majority of Ashantis to support Kyerematen has reportedly rattled the NPP, which has traditionally enjoyed overwhelming support in the region. Residents emphasized the importance of voting for someone they perceive as not only one of their own but also more competent than other candidates in the race.
The alleged vote-buying efforts, coupled with growing opposition sentiment, have cast a shadow over the NPP’s campaign strategy in the Ashanti Region. Observers believe the ruling party faces an uphill battle to retain its influence in the region amidst increasing calls for change.
As tensions rise in the lead-up to the elections, questions about the role of governance, accountability, and voter autonomy loom large. While the NPP denies any vote-buying allegations, the reports of farming input distributions have sparked heated debates about ethics and the party’s dwindling fortunes in its stronghold.
