NPP’s Hajia Fati fined Ghc9000 over Assault on Journalist

A Human Rights Court has fined popular supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hajia Fati Amadu, an amount of GHC 9,000 in punitive damages to reporter of Accra based Adom FM, Charity Akosua Sakyiwaa for breaching her constitutional and fundamental human rights.

Hajia Fati is also to publish an unqualified apology to Sekyiwaa in the Daily Graphic Newspaper within 14 days of the judgement.

The second respondent in the case – NPP, however, was not charged for any wrongdoing in the final ruling which was delivered by the Presiding Judge, Justice Gifty Adjei Addo.

According to Lawyer of the complainant, Samson Lardi Ayenini, Her ladyship Gifty Adjei Addo based her judgement on Article 21(1A) and 24(1) of the 1992 constitution which respectively state that;

“All persons shall have the right to freedom of speech and expression, which shall include freedom of the press and other media” and that “every person has the right to work under satisfactory, safe and healthy conditions, and shall receive equal pay for equal work without distinction of any kind.”

This ruling comes after over a year of argument between both parties.
