The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has given the Akufo-Addo led government a two-week ultimatum to release funds for the immediate disbursement of student loans.
NUGS expressed its displeasure at the delay in the disbursements of the Student Loan Trust Fund (STLF) to beneficiaries this academic year and blamed authorities for its poor management.
Addressing the press today, NUGS President, Isaac Jay Hyde, asserted that over 10 percent of total number of undergraduates in tertiary institutions in Ghana are dependent on STLF, hence its delay will render many student “hopeless”
“Many a student who rely on the funds are left in limbo and in a state of hopelessness as to how they will survive this academic year without the disbursement. The situation is a dire one and it calls for a swift attention from the government”.
NUGS warned that, if the government fails to ensure the release of student loan funds within two weeks, the student body will employ other means to force authorities to comply with their demands.
“We therefore give the government two-week ultimatum to heed to the cry of the teeming Ghanaian students in the various tertiary institutions in the country, by releasing the funds for the disbursement of the student loan, otherwise we will resort to our usual modus-operandi which will compel the government to act” Mr Hyde asserted.
NUGS also called on all student beneficiaries to remain calm and desist from any action “whilst the union resort to the necessary laid down procedures to engage authorities to get the matter resolved. The union will not relent in its effort to use every legal means available to get the Loan disbursement restored.”
