Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, is under fire for a 2014 post on X (formerly Twitter) where he praised parliamentary committees as the best platforms for Ghanaians to get answers for actions taken in their name and with their resources.

In his post – dated July 2, 2014, Oppong Nkrumah stated, “Parliamentary cttees are the best places where the ‘people’ get answers for acts done in their name, on their behalf or with their resources.”

However, recent events have cast a shadow over his earlier sentiments. Ghanaians have expressed disappointment in Oppong Nkrumah’s handling of questions regarding the provision of decent housing for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, who remain in tents and exposed to harsh weather conditions. Despite addressing the Parliamentary Committee on Government Assurances on the extent of work on the project, many Ghanaians felt his responses were evasive and lacked empathy.

Critics took to the comment section of his 2014 post to voice their frustrations.

One user, @SWayfu, remarked, “At the time of this post he was one of the best but today he’s just one of the worst people in government without iota of respect for the people. Absolutely disgusting and disgraceful.”

Another user, @StatsAfric, commented, “Disappointed listening to our onetime radio idol @konkrumah having a us£less banter. How do we call it an emergency if after a year, govt is yet to provide any relief to the people? Should you be deflecting over these matters as a young promising leader? This is bàd, @konkrumah.”

The backlash highlights the growing dissatisfaction among Ghanaians with the government’s response to the Akosombo Dam spillage crisis.

As one user, @Linkinyaw, put it, “Mr insincere Minister over to you. After Nana Addo you are the next biggest disappointment in this govt.”
