The Ministry of Information on Thursday, October 19 convened a national dialogue on the ‘impact of Disinformation on Electoral Integrity, Peace, and Security in Africa’.

The event was organized in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in a tweet said “Through the dialogue, we adopted a number of resolutions on what we must do to combat disinformation as a country.

“My special appreciation to all stakeholders who made time today to participate in the dialogue.”

 

The National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah who spoke at the event said misinformation poses a security threat.

“In Ghana, a more disconcerting trend is also emerging,” he said.

He added, “Notably following the coup in Niger, certain individuals in academia, civil society and the media, from what I have observed have been propagating false narratives in support of a coup or military rule.”

He further stated that “these actors have gained substantial followings on social media leveraging the influence to disseminate misinformation that threatens our nation’s peace and also stability, especially as we approach the critical December 2024 general election and this is a matter of serious concern.”
