ORAL a needless committee, only for personal vendetta – Afenyo-Markin

"I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the establishment of the so-called ORAL Committee. I hold the humble view that it is a needless committee," he said.

The outgoing Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has described the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee, initiated by President-elect John Mahama, as a needless endeavour.

According to him, the committee is merely a personal vendetta aimed at undermining the governance of the country.

“I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the establishment of the so-called ORAL Committee. I hold the humble view that it is a needless committee,” he said.

He further argued that the committee lacks constitutional backing and is solely intended for personal retribution.

ORAL is a committee set up by the incoming president, with the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as the chairperson.

Its mandate is to investigate alleged corrupt activities by members of the outgoing NPP government and refer the cases to the relevant authorities for further investigation and prosecution.

However, Mr Afenyo-Markin contended, “If we allow this committee to continue with its so-called wild goose chase, it will disrupt the governance of this country.”

“We don’t want people to be chasing others, going into people’s bedrooms thinking that because their party is in power, they should be allowed to chase individuals for the so-called ORAL,” he added.

He urged the incoming government to seek alternative methods to address suspected corruption, ideally by supporting existing state institutions that are legally mandated to fight crime, rather than establishing ORAL.

Mr Afenyo-Markin emphasised, “We are not going to allow you to use unconstitutional means to silence us, to frustrate people, and to chase individuals into their homes.”

“Let us allow the laws of our country to work,” he concluded while speaking during the dissolution of the 8th parliament.
