“Mr Speaker, let me state that there is no contest for running mate and I’m not involved in campaigning for the running mate position, it should be loud and clear.”

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has denied media reports that he’s actively engaged in campaigning for the running mate position of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the detriment of his parliamentary duties.

This follows claims by some members of the Minority in Parliament that the Suame MP is lobbying to be selected as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s Flagbearer in the 2024 general election.

Earlier in the week, a former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu had advised the Majority Leader to concentrate on his critical oversight responsibilities as the Leader of Government Business in Parliament rather than campaigning for the position of running mate

During his contribution to the debate on the 2024 Budget Statement, the Minority Chief Whip, Kwame Governs Agbodza took another dig at what he said was the intense lobbying of Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to be running mate.

In a sharp rebuttal however, the Majority Leader refuted these claims and emphasized that there is no ongoing contest for the running mate position.

“Mr Speaker, let me state that there is no contest for running mate and I’m not involved in campaigning for the running mate position, it should be loud and clear.”

He urged members of the Minority Caucus not to engage in conjectures and to focus on the debate of the 2024 Budget Statement.

The 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government, presented by Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister for Finance on November 21, 2023, outlined the government’s financial plan for the upcoming fiscal year.

The budget is now undergoing thorough scrutiny and debate in Parliament, where Members of Parliament are analyzing and discussing revenue projections, proposed expenditures, and the economic policy direction to ensure accountability and transparency in financial matters.
