Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Ghana have said that the current composition of parliament might fail to properly scrutinize the Agyapa Royalties Deal due to low attendance of members.
According to them, the election period will render the scrutiny inefficient because most parliamentarians are away campaigning for the upcoming December elections. Therefore, their absence will render the parliament’s findings inaccurate.

“Many of them are in the nuke and crannies of this country canvassing for votes. We do not have the massive attendance in the house and so I am a bit skeptical in terms of what kind of work that will go into it,” stated George Osei Bimbeh, Country Director of SEND Ghana and a member of the CSO, in an interview with Accra based Citi FM.
This comes after President Akufo-Addo instructed Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to submit the deal to parliament for review after the Special Prosecutor, Dr. Martin Amidu had submitted a corruption risk assessment report to him following the detection of some anomalies.
President Akufo-Addo, in a press release, directed the finance minister to resubmit the deal to parliament for the approval process to start all over again. This is to clear any doubt about the deal.
