Parliament yet to decide the fate of NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi

A decision as to whether the Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, should be referred to the Privileges Committee of Parliament over his allegations against some Members of Parliament (MPs) has been deferred by the House.

In what appeared to be a move to equalize the referral of Kennedy Agyapong to the Privileges Committee of Parliament, the MP for Tolon and Second Deputy Majority Whip, Habib Iddrisu, on Thursday July 15, 2021, moved a motion on the loor of the House to drag the NDC Communications Officer to the Committee on Privileges.

The motion sought to draw the attention of the Speaker to comments made by Sammy Gyamfi, some time ago which the MP considers as defamatory to some key parliamentarians and for which  he thinks Gyamfi must come and answer to contempt charges.

It would be recalled that a few months ago, in expressing his disappointment over the Minority’s failure to prevent the approval of some Ministers designates by Parliament, Sammy Gyamfi accused the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu; Minority Chief Whip, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak; and the Speaker, Alban Sumana Bagbin of betrayal.

According to the Deputy Whip, the comment made by the Communications Officer of the NDC against the members of his own party on the Minority Leadership bench and the Speaker, “is an attack on the Speakership and the Leadership of the House.”

However, Habbib Iddrisu motion was met with stiff opposition from the Minority Group who contended that the procedure for filing the motion was flawed.

After a back and forth debate, the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, who was in the Chair in plenary, deferred a decision on the request to a later day.
