PHOTOS: Asylum Down gutter choked with plastic waste

The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has disclosed that Ghana spends $290 million, 1.6 percent of her GDP, on poor sanitation every year.

Sanitation problem in Accra is gradually becoming disappointing by the day as it poses serious health threats to residents.

Kasapafmonline.com‘s camera on January 23 captured footage of heaped waste materials in the gutter close to the luxurious Paloma Hotel at the Ring Road Central.

The team observed that many plastic bottles, takeaway packs, pure water sachets, polythene bags, human excreta and all types of waste have choked the gutter.

The gutter extends from Nima through to Asylum Down and finally into the Odaw River at Circle.

The situation, an embarrassing scene which has been ignored by sanitation authorities is making life uncomfortable for residents and food vendors selling close to the gutter.

Responding to the issue, a staff of Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), Maame Dokua, to Kasapafmonline.com that she will contact the waste management company in charge to clear the waste.

For many, the fight against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the streets seems to be yielding no positive results even when the Ministry for Sanitation and Water Resources provided various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) a total of 5,100 litter bins to be placed along selected streets and public places in some selected regional capitals of Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale, Ho, Dambai and Cape Coast to address public littering.
