Plan Int. rolls out new projects in Three Regions
An International Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Plan International Ghana has rolled out its latest humanitarian project dubbed “Rural Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Project ‘RWASH Project” in three out of the 16 regions of Ghana.
The three districts in the three regions which are currently enjoying the RWASH project are Agona East in the Central Region, Akuapm North in the Eastern Region and Afadzato South in the Volta Region.
In all 36 communities in the three districts from the three regions are benefiting from the project.
According to the RWASH Project Coordinator, Mr. William Domapielle in an interview with the media, the RWASH project is a three years programme which began in October 2018 and expected to end in October 2021.
He explained that the RWASH project is expected to contribute to the reduction in morbidity and mortality among children especially girls, through equitable access to safe, affordable and sustainable water and improve Sanitation and hygiene by 2021.
The project will specifically increase access to safe, affordable and sustainable drinking water to 32,333 beneficiaries with special attention to the needs of vulnerable girls and women within the three districts.
The following are the key activities under the RWASH Project are: Implementation of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) in 36 communities, provision of water facilities for communities, schools and health centers, construction of 36 institutional girl friendly toilet facilities for schools, use of Smarter Wash Technology to ensure sustainability, assessment of root causes of gender based inequalities and hygiene promotion campaigns and national, regional and district levels.
The rest are: education on Menstrual Hygiene Management at community and school levels, establishment of Village Saving and Loans Associations (VSLA) in 36 communities, ensure close collaboration with partners, support WASH sector initiatives as well as develop water safety plans for all water facilities.
The RWASH project is estimated to benefit a total of 32,333 community members’ comprising 16, 051 women/girls and 16, 282 boys/men directly. Out of the 32,333 beneficiaries will be 12, 145 school children (5,832 boys and 6,313girls).
Again, the project will also integrate gender activities utilizing evidence based approaches, best practices, and targeted technical expertise as an integral part of WASH and related actions.
RWASH intends to focusing more on gender transformative programming, empowerment of women through Village saving and loan associations, menstrual hygiene management in communities and schools and closely work with Civil Society Organisations, Ministries and key WASH stakeholders at the national level.
