Oyoko Methodist Senior High School (OMESS) and Koforidua-based Pope John Senior High School (POJOSS) picked the last two slots for the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2019 Nana Sir Ofori-Atta I National Energy Quiz.
With 20 and 15 points respectively, the two booked their places at the expense of the Seventh Day Adventist Senior High School who scored 13 points.
The favourites Pojoss suffered to keep up in the game, finishing with only 15 points but also did better than SDA SHS who were equally chasing one of two tickets from the New Juaben Zone.
The two have thus joined 16 already qualified schools to the quarterfinals to round up the preliminary stage of the competition begun on the 19th of November, 2019 with the quarter-finals scheduled for January 22 to 24, 2020.
18 Schools have thus booked their places in the quarterfinals. They are St. Peters SHS, Nkwatia Presby SHS, Osino SHTS, Saviour SHS, Oda SHS, St. Francis SHTS, Nkawkaw SHS, Bepong SHS and Larteh SHS.
The rest are Aburi SHTS, Adeiso Presby SHS, Asamankese SHS, Yilo Krobo SHS, Anum Presby SHS, Ofori Panyin SHS and New Nsutam SHTS.
Eastern Regional Secretary of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and co-organizers of the event, Daniel Kofi Mensah who spoke at the end of the contest was convinced that the quiz will open the minds of the students in the study of oil and gas.
He added that the program will empower young Ghanaians in the field of oil and gas to enable them to take up jobs in the oil and gas sector.
The NEQ which is designed to empower Senior High and Technical Schools with knowledge in the entire energy value chain including petroleum upstream and downstream, power generation, transmission and distribution, focuses on Power, Petroleum and Culture.
It equally aims at educating the youth in both Senior High Schools (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) on the energy sector.
The NEQ is sponsored by the Ghana Oil Company Limited, Ghana Grid Company Limited, The Energy Commission, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana National Gas Company Limited and the Petroleum Commission.
The annual competition which is run under the auspices of Nananom of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, is jointly organized by Eastern Star Awards Co. Limited in partnership with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and coordinated in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Energy.
