Police reiterates call for financial institutions to procure fit-for purpose bullion vans
The Ghana Police Service after last year’s incident at James Town threatened to withdraw its services if the financial institutions failed to provide them with the necessary logistics to protect their men.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated calls for all financial institutions in the country to resort to the use of fit for purpose bullion vans for their cash-in transit activities.
The remarks were made after the Police in the Greater Accra Region thwarted an attempted robbery attack on a bullion van at the North Industrial Area.
The attack comes months after a police officer was shot and killed by armed robbers at James Town in Accra in a robbery attack on a bullion van.
The forceful intervention of a police officer who was on duty nearby foiled yesterday’s attempted robbery on the bullion van at the Industrial Area in Accra.
While the robbers were fleeing the scene, they fired indiscriminately into the crowd, leading to three people sustaining various degrees of injuries. They have been admitted at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.
The Ghana Police Service after last year’s incident at James Town threatened to withdraw its services if the financial institutions failed to provide them with the necessary logistics to protect their men.
The incident thus triggered a number of reforms, including the provision of standard bulletproof vans for the carting of money, as well as police and military escorts.
The Ghana Police Service says the suspects in yesterday’s case are being pursued by anti-robbery teams.
The Service has meanwhile asked the public to volunteer useful information that will lead to the arrest of the culprits. It also assured the public that the perpetrators, when arrested, will face justice.
