Police Secure 12-Year-Old Child Bride and Mother, Launch Investigation into Child Marriage
The police however says it is collaborating with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, as well as the Department of Social Welfare, to provide necessary support while investigations are still ongoing to get to the bottom of the matter.
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that they have located and ensured the safety of the 12-year-old girl allegedly married to the 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo in Nungua, Accra.
According to a social media post, both the girl and her mother are currently under police protection.
It will be recalled that a customary marriage ceremony, which took place recently between the elderly Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, and the minor, Naa Ayemoede, ignited widespread public criticism due to the significant age gap and concerns for the child’s future.
But the spokesperson for the Gborbu Wulomo defended the marriage, brushing off the criticism as stemming from ignorance.
