Police Service still hiding the identity of rogue officer who pulled a pistol on a motorist

In the latest update on the incident which has attracted a huge public condemnation on social media after a video on the incident went viral, the service is still withholding his name, referring to him only as the perceived gunman”.

The Ghana Police Service, is still hiding the identity of its rogue officer who pulled a pistol on a motorist, but said he had been interdicted.

Whilst brandishing his gun to scare his victim from any retaliation, the officer several times, assaulted the motorist before angrily breaking the side mirror, as well as the glass window of his vehicle with the weapon over the weekend, as the motorist managed to dash into his car to flee from his rage.

In the latest update on the incident which has attracted a huge public condemnation on social media after a video on the incident went viral, the service is still withholding his name, referring to him only as the perceived gunman”.

It, however, gave his rank as “a police Sergeant”,  who is “stationed at the Central Regional Police Command”. Concealment of identity is not a luxury civilian offenders enjoy from the police administration.

Even though the rogue officer was in the custody of his authorities, the Police Service, had hidden his identity and other details in an earlier statement issued last Saturday on its official Facebook page, preferring to call him a “perceived gunman”.

But a leaked police situation report available to The Herald, later has since revealed his true identity to be General Sargent George Kpordzo, a dispatch rider of Regional MTTD, Cape Coast in the Central Region with 41457 given as his Service Number.

In the latest release entitled “update on Police arrest and retrieval of weapon from perceived gunman”, the service wrote saying “the attention of the Police Service was drawn to a video in which a person wielding a pistol was captured engaged in an argument and a subsequent fight with another person”.

It claimed that the “Police immediately commenced investigation into the incident resulting in the arrest of the person and subsequent retrieval of the weapon.

“Preliminary findings show that the person who was seen wielding the weapon is a police Sergeant stationed at the Central Regional Police Command. The said police man has been interdicted to make way for a full investigation into the matter.

“Investigation further indicates that the Police Sgt. lodged a complaint of assault against his assailant alleging that he was attacked by a group of persons one of whom was wielding a cutlass adding, “both parties are assisting police investigations.

It stated that “the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has also commenced investigation into the conduct of the police officer. Both the criminal investigation and the professional standards investigation will run concurrently.

“We would like to assure the public that justice will be served.

The leaked situation report, had Sargent Kpordzo, rather lying to the police that he was a victim of assault.

This was after he had rushed to Kasoa Division CID, and lodged a complaint that he was driving his Toyota Corolla No GW 2959 -13 from Winneba towards Accra, when he was assaulted, totally at variance with what was captured in the video.

Interestingly, Sargent Kpordzo, who was seen in the video with a long chewing stick in his mouth, has since been issued with a medical form to go to the hospital, obviously to hold himself as the victim. He appears to have inflicted a wound on himself to hoodwink everyone into believing he was rather assaulted.

The amateur video that had been making rounds on social media ahead of the police statement, shows the two men on the shoulders of a road that is believed to be the Accra-Cape Coast Road.

Unsure what led to the two getting into such a confrontation, the tall lankier-looking Sargent Kpordzo, wielding his gun in his right hand, more than once gets clean slaps to the face of the other man.

With two cars parked just around them, the two continue to engage in an argument, even as the other man makes intermittent attempts to walk away from the one brandishing the gun.

His attempts fail every time, because the one with the gun walks right back on him, using the least opportunity to hit him in the face with his left hand.

Another man (a third person) wearing a black and yellow basketball tan top joins in, attempting to separate them, but without fail.

At the next opportunity, the man who was on the receiving side of all the abuse, rushes to his car and quickly prepares to drive away, but is again chased down by the man wielding the gun.

With no access to the man now because he is in his car, the man with the gun turns his anger to the car, smashing the side mirrors and the windshields of the car before the car finally makes its way onto the road and the driver sped off.

In a post shared by a Facebook user called Bonifacio Edem Anthony, who claims to be a cousin of the man who was assaulted, he explained that it was an issue of the latter trying to bring to attention the careless driving of the gun-wielding man.

“This just happened some few hours ago, you driving carelessly and dangerously and my cousin went to tell you to be a little careful because you have a gun you started hitting him, you fink my cousin is scared of guns… Hmmm I thank God for my cousin’s life,” the caption read.

Social media users are calling on the Ghana Police Service to identify the man publicly brandishing a gun and also for causing fear and panic among motorists.

The pistol appears to be a police pistol issued to him.
