President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized that Africa’s future depends on its young population, which constitutes over 60% of the continent’s demographics, with the majority under the age of 25.

Speaking at a high-level retreat of Heads of State on the African Union’s Institutional Reforms, President Mahama stressed the need for the AU’s frameworks to actively empower young people and women, ensuring their participation in leadership and decision-making processes. He underscored that integrating their voices into policymaking is essential for Africa’s progress.

“Africa’s future lies in its youth, yet their voices are largely absent in policymaking. We must institutionalize frameworks that empower young people and women to take leadership roles at all levels,” he stated.

President Mahama also addressed economic integration, noting that while the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) has established a foundation for a unified market, significant efforts are still required. He emphasized the need to eliminate trade barriers, harmonize regulations, and invest in infrastructure to maximize the potential of intra-African trade.

His remarks underscored the urgency of fostering inclusive governance and economic policies that will drive Africa’s sustainable development.
