President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to maintaining a lean government, emphasizing that his recent appointments reflect this pledge.
“The same commitment to composing a lean government has found expression in the appointments made at the presidency so far,” Mahama stated during the swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed deputy ministers at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

The President disclosed that he has appointed a modest 27 presidential staffers to various roles and three individuals as directors of key government initiatives, bringing the total number of political appointees to 30. This list is currently pending approval from the Council of State. Notably, this figure represents a significant reduction from the 336 political appointees at the presidency under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, and Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, assured the President of their dedication to working closely with their respective ministers to implement government policies effectively.
Mahama’s commitment to a lean government is also reflected in his decision to limit his cabinet to 60 ministers, despite facing pressure from various stakeholders. So far, he has appointed 56 ministers, with four additional deputy ministers expected to be submitted for approval this week.
By maintaining a streamlined government, President Mahama aims to ensure fiscal discipline, the efficient use of public resources, and effective governance.
