PUWU condemns political interference in state institutions

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) has condemned the prevalence of political interference in state institutions.

According to the Union, this undermines progress of these institutions and hinders conducive working environments.

General Secretary of the PUWU, Micheal Adum Atta Nyantakyi said this at the 13th Delegates Conference of the Union in the Central Region on August 9.

He cited the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other institutions which have been micro-managed by politicians.

Mr Nyantakyi called on politicians to desist from such acts.

“Most of the companies we are working in are state companies and there are always political interference in the running of those companies. This affects both the progress and the sanity that needs to prevail at the workplace.”

“And this time, workers will also want to see that if they are contributing their quota, then they should also get fair opportunities at the workplace. But sometimes, these opportunities are also blocked because of some of these political interferences,” he alleged.

The PUWU president also cautioned workers against illegal operations at the workplace.

“We also have some members who will not want to do things the right way. Those are always the challenges we need to constantly address and see how we navigate through them,” he noted.

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah assured workers of improved working conditions.

“As a sector minister, my work is to continuously improve the working conditions of workers to contribute meaningfully to the development of this country,” he promised.

The theme for the conference was ‘Building a resilient union through aggressive organising and active grassroot participation’.
