With just two months to Ghana’s general elections, Musah Superior, a senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has fiercely criticised the recent tariff increases announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

The Commission revealed a 3.02% hike in electricity tariffs and a 1.86% rise in water tariffs for the third quarter of 2024, set to take effect from October 1.

In a statement, Musah Superior described the decision as “stupid,” arguing that it damages the NPP’s popularity and disincentivises voters from supporting the party.

Musah Superior, former Chief Executive Officer of Tamale Metropolitan Assembly in the Northern Region further urged the government to reverse or halt the implementation of the tariff increases, warning that such decisions jeopardize the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.

He emphasized that elections cannot be won with what he called “buffoonery decisions,” accusing the party of effectively “shooting itself in the foot” with the timing of the announcement.
