Between the period 2017- 2020, electricity tariff was reduced by an average of 2.8% by the Akufo-Addo government a record that is unmatched compared to the period between 2013 and 2016.

This was revealed by the Energy Minister, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh during a press briefing in Accra on Sunday on the energy sector under the topic; ‘Delivering Reliable and Affordable Power’, organized by the Ministry of Information on Sunday.

He said the 2.8% overall reduction in tariff within those four years is clearly superior in terms of relief to the ordinary people compared to the 28.8% increase between 2013 and 2016 under the previous government.

The Minister said his outfit is currently engaging the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) on how best tariffs can reflect cost and make the sector financially viable.

He says the Ministry is also engaging the PURC on a graduated tariff scheme going forward.

All these according to Dr. Prempeh are part of collective efforts to make electricity cost reasonable for consumers.

He further assured that government will continue to provide affordable electricity for Ghanaians in furtherance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s manifesto pledge to the Ghanaian people.

“Ensuring reliability and affordability is key and top on our agenda” he emphasized.
