Some residents of Choice, a suberb of Weija in the Weija/Gbawe Municipal Assembly of the Greater Accra Region are not happy to have been summoned by the Assembly over property Rates.
According to them, both the Government and the Assembly have failed to provide them with basic social amenities and so both have lost the opportunity to demand property rates from them.
Residents who spoke with ghananewsonline.com.gh on conditions of anonymity claimed since 1992 the assembly has never extended light and water to them.
“The assembly never bothered to make our inner roads motorable, when it rains students are forced to stay home”, one resident stated.
A retiree told this network that, he single-handedly brought light to the area in the 90s before other individuals also brought water and worked on the roads through Community labour.
He said, they are aready to pay Property Rates but the central and local governments would have to demonstrate sense of commitment of making life better for them first.
They alleged that, all attemptes to get the Member of Parliament (MP) and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area to respond to their concerns have been unsuccessful.
Ghananewsonline.com.gh has come across a letter dated December, 16, 2019 titled “Administrative Summons” from The Weija/Gbawe Municipal Assembly inviting individual households to a meeting scheduled for 27th December, 2019 at 11am.
The letter reads…. ”
Mr. Kyeiku Ahuntor (just a name) (ABC 000999630) you are by this notice Summoned before the Weija/Gbawe Municipal Assembly Administrative Committee to answer a complaint on your failure to pay your Property Rate of GHS 296.56, contrary to Act 936 Sections 144 and 158 ohm Local Governance Act 2006 and the Byelaws of the Assembly, and further state why you should not be charged the 30% penalty (GHS 88.97 ) for failure to pay your property rate in 20l9″.
Out sources say, the residents planned to meet on Thursday, 26th December and on Friday 27th December match peaceful to Asembly to tell them their minds.
At the time of filing this report the assembly wasn’t answering the calls.
