Reverse all illegal declarations – Afenyo-Markin tells EC

The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to take immediate action to reverse what he describes as “illegal declarations” of parliamentary results in some constituencies.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, December 11, Mr Afenyo-Markin urged the EC’s chairperson, Jean Mensa to intervene and address petitions submitted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The EC must take immediate steps to reverse these illegal declarations, which were not based on properly collated results,” he said, adding that the national headquarters of the EC must address these grievances promptly. “The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission should respond positively to the petitions and ensure that the rule of law is upheld.”

The NPP has raised concerns over results declared in constituencies including Ablekuma North, Dome-Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, and others, which they claim were made without proper verification.

They are urging the EC to thoroughly investigate and rectify these issues to maintain public trust and electoral credibility.

Mr Afenyo-Markin accused the NDC of engaging in activities to undermine the democratic process, including threatening NPP candidates and attempting to destroy evidence, such as election pink sheets. He cited incidents in constituencies such as Abuakwa North, where the NPP’s parliamentary candidate reportedly faced harassment and had to flee her residence under police protection.

According to Afenyo-Markin, within 16 hours of the election, the NPP’s data systems revealed that the results were not in their favour, the NPP acted responsibly in the interest of democracy not waiting for the EC to declare the outcome.

Mr Afenyo-Markin contrasted this with what he described as disruptive actions by the NDC. “Why would the NDC, in an attempt to gain more seats, go around destroying the country, damaging public property, and instilling fear and panic in candidates and the public?” he questioned.
