National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), has cautioned motorists to adhere to road safety rules coming this Christmas, to prevent road carnage.
In a press statement released today and copied to ghananewsonline.com.gh, the NRSA admonished drivers against all forms of road misconduct as “we hit the busy end of the year”.
The Director-General of the Authority, Ing. Mrs. May Obiri-Yeboah, who signed the document was concerned about the challenges the Authority faces in overseeing road activities during the festive season.
“While we acknowledge the collective contribution of stakeholders for the reductions, we are challenged to sustain it and reduce it further as we hit the busy end of the year. A crash-free yuletide is possible provided road users will renew their pledge to be more disciplined,” she stated in the release.
According to the Authority, though provisional statistics from January to September this year (2019) indicate an increase in the number of crashes and injuries, the period has recorded a significant decrease in persons killed through road traffic crashes over the same period of 2018.
The NSRA has however pointed out that, the statistics could worsen if precautionary measures are not taken immediately.
Therefore in a bid to raise the level of awareness for the season, the NSRA acting under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport (MoT) and in collaboration with the DVLA, MTTD, Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), will officially launch the 2019 Road Safety Christmas Campaign on Thursday 14th November, 2019 under the theme, “Stop Road Accidents Now, Before it Stops You.
The launch has been scheduled for the Takoradi Station in Kaneshie, Accra at 9:00am.
The launch will outdoor key actions aimed at reducing the risk to road traffic crashes and casualties often associated with the busy festive end of the year.
