Roads Minister storms construction site, orders Arrest of Contractors
Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta has ordered the arrest of Turkish developers overseeing the construction of a 22-storey building in the airport residential area, Accra.
The minister also ordered the immediate demolition of an unlawfully erected concrete barrier by the developers. The barrier which was put up to facilitate the 22-storey building project has blocked portions of the road, causing vehicular traffic.
Additionally, the trench dug for the foundation of the storey building caused cracks in some buildings of the Association International School (AIS) which is adjacent the site.
This move by the roads and highways minister follows several complaints from residents that the construction was destroying the portions of a major road in the area. Some residents say the contractors have no permit for the project.
Spotted in a video leading a team to the construction site, Mr Amoako- Atta described the construction as “nonsensical and madness” considering it consequences on other major projects in the municipality.
“Because of this project, you destroy public road? This is nonsensical and madness. It is madness” he fumed.
The minister consequently ordered a halt in construction as the “supervisor” seen in the video was arrested.
