The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) has become a powerful catalyst for local climate action, securing commitments from over 360 local governments.

As the regional chapter of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, CoM SSA is a dynamic partnership between city networks, development agencies, and funding institutions.

Its core mission is to empower cities to tackle the dual challenges of climate change and access to sustainable energy.

In Ghana, CoM SSA is collaborating with eight signatory cities: Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly and other Assemblies. Together, they aim to provide a scientifically-grounded strategic framework for adaptation, mitigation, and access to affordable clean energy, harnessing innovative tools for resource-efficient planning.

Abdul Mumin Issah, the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly announced that the Assembly is poised to roll out initiatives aimed at enhancing resilience, scaling up mitigation and adaptation efforts, and ensuring the development of low-emission and climate-resilient infrastructure.

“This is a platform where every voice matters, where diverse perspectives enrich the conversation, and where constructive dialogue certainly leads to unearthing innovative and impactful solutions to climate change challenges. The decisions we make here will shape the future of Sekondi-Takoradi while setting enviable examples for other cities in Ghana, Sub-Saharan Africa, and beyond” he stated.

Shea O’Neil, the Country manager for Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa CoM SSA, underscored the need for the partnership.

“We are proud to support the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) in developing Ghana’s first Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan. Our goal is to create a better future for the people of STMA, as we recognize that cities, particularly in Africa, will be severely impacted by climate change.

“It’s crucial that we take action now, and that action begins with planning. To make informed decisions, we need a deep understanding of the current situation in STMA, what the data is telling us, and how we can move forward to combat climate change effectively. This plan will not only benefit the people of STMA today but also future generations, which is even more important,” she explained.
