Showdown in Parliament on Tuesday as Ato Forson’s group vows to Defend “Our Majority Status at All Costs”
...Immediate Abolishment of E-Levy, Betting Tax high on he agenda
In a defiant move, the new Majority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has boldly declared that his group – the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is now the official Majority in Parliament, and that they will fiercely defend their status against any opposition from any quarters.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday afternoon at Parliament House in Accra, Dr. Forson dismissed the Supreme Court’s ruling, claiming it does not change the fact that his side holds the majority.
Citing Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision, which follows a precedent set by former Speaker Prof. Aaron Mike Ocquaye, Dr. Forson affirmed that his party’s position as the Majority is not up for debate.
“We are the Majority, and we will jealously protect our newly acquired status. We will not relinquish this position,” he warned.
He also sent a stern message to the government, announcing that the new Majority intends to use their numbers to abolish controversial policies like the E-Levy and the betting tax, which have sparked widespread public backlash.
In a swift response to the Speaker’s declaration, the NPP Caucus rushed to the Supreme Court, which ruled against the Speaker’s decision. Despite this, Ato Forson remains defiant, insisting they will resist any efforts to undermine their standing in Parliament.
The ruling affects key legislators including NDC’s Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of Amenfi Central, Andrew Amoako Asiamah of Fomena, NPP’s Kojo Asante of Suhum, and Cynthia Morrison of Agona West. Dr. Forson, however, is unyielding, promising that his side will not back down in the battle for majority control.
This power struggle sets the stage for a fierce political showdown in the coming weeks as both sides seek to assert their dominance in Parliament.
