In response to the growing threat of illicit arms, particularly in the lead-up to Ghana’s crucial upcoming elections, the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has launched a new campaign titled “Silencing the Gun to Save a Life.” The initiative aims to enhance peace and security in the country by effectively controlling the spread of small arms, light weapons, and related materials.

The campaign comes at a critical time, following recent violent clashes in Accra’s Mamobi-Nima area, where two people were shot, and four others injured during a political peace walk involving the two major political parties. The incident has heightened concerns about public safety as tensions rise ahead of the elections.

Public education will be a key focus, with efforts aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of small arms and light weapons and discouraging their illegal circulation.

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons also emphasized the role of the youth in upholding peace during the election period. He encouraged young people to unite and become a driving force for peace, urging them to channel their energy and enthusiasm into making this campaign a success and putting an end to electoral violence.

The “Silencing the Gun to Save a Life” campaign is a call to action for all Ghanaians to work together to create a safer, more peaceful society during this election year and beyond.
