Spio-Garbrah accuses gov’t of packing EC, Supreme Court with NPP loyalists
He says the EC, just like the Supreme Court, have been filled with persons who are politically aligned with the governing New Patriotic Party.
Ekwow-Spio-Garbrah, a former Minister of Education under the erstwhile John Mills administration has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of being staffed with party tainted people.
He says the EC, just like the Supreme Court, have been filled with persons who are politically aligned with the governing New Patriotic Party.
According to the former Minister of Communications, the integrity of the election management body has been compromised considering the fact that persons who have served as propagandists for the NPP have been appointed to the office.
Speaking on the Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, Tuesday, October 29, 2024, the former Trade and Industry Minister alleged that the said persons with NPP colours who have been appointed to the EC are scheming to rig the upcoming polls for the ruling party.
He said the EC was bent on disenfranchising a lot of Ghanaians as it did to residents of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi and Likpe (SALL) in the 2020 general elections where they were denied from taking part in the parliamentary elections.
“The government, like they have done with the Supreme Court, has picked people who are not independent-minded to the EC. Propaganda communicators who have publicly defended the NPP on radio are now at the EC and all of them are thinking alike to manipulate the elections against the NDC,” he stated.
He cited the missing names on the register during the voters’ exhibition as part of the means the EC is scheming with the government to steal the verdict of the people.
Just as it occurred in SALL, Dr. Spio-Garbrah was confident the EC wants to replicate a similar incident in 2024.
“We are praying that on election day people will not be roaming about to identify their polling stations. If you look at what they did to SALL by not allowing them the right to vote for a whole four years, it means they want to do that to a lot more people,” he said, advising the police to act professionally in order not to prevent people from exercising their franchise.
“The police should act professionally and people should not be curtailed in their rooms like it happened during covid times,” he added.
