Stakeholders Brainstorm on ECOWAS Veterinary Pharmaceutical Protocol

As a result of the absence of guidelines that regulate the implementation of ECOWAS veterinary pharmaceutical protocol in Ghana, a stakeholders brainstorming session has been held in a bid to curb the spread of livestock diseases in the sub-region and bring sanity to the industry.

The stakeholders brainstorming session has become critical because as livestock transit the region, they carry infectious diseases along. Available information indicates that some of the diseases can be transmitted to human beings hence the need to put in place a clear guidelines on how to harmonise the use of vaccines and drugs in the region.

Mr. Joseph Klu, an Agribusiness consultant said they should be designated shop to buy veterinary pharmaceutical products rather than from the open market. This, he said, was crucial in order to harmonise regulation in the region so that players in the livestock space can have a common goal in terms of diseases control.

Issues regarding wrong use of veterinary pharmaceutical products and their mislabeling according to him should be tackled. On the registration of veterinary pharmaceutical products in the ECOWAS region, Mr. Klu advocated strongly for harmonization of the process.

He said “when you register a veterinary pharmaceutical product in Nigeria you should be able to move the product in the West African sub-region without registering the product again in Ghana or Senegal.”

Mrs. Victoria Norgbey, the National President of Women in Poultry Value Chain in her delivery, said, stakeholders in the livestock industry needed veterinary protocol to be operational in order to get the right feed, drugs and vaccines for their livestock and poultry production.

The women in poultry value chain, GhanaNewsOnline.com.gh, has gathered is an Africa union body in charge of animal resource initiative with the cardinal aim to encourage and support women participating actively in the poultry value chain because it came to light per a research conducted by a consultant that women do the major work in the production of poultry like feeding and sanitation related jobs but paradoxically are not involved in the decision making table .
