Stormzy to receive honorary degree from Cambridge University

British-Ghanaian rapper, Michael Omari Owuo Junior, better known as Stormzy, has has been nominated to receive an honorary degree from the University of Cambridge, in recognition of his outstanding philanthropic work and contributions across multiple fields.
Stormzy is amongst eight individual nominated to receive a Doctorate in Law by the prestigious institution.

Recognition of philanthropy and social impact An official statement on the website of Cambridge university said Stormzy is been recognized for his philanthropic work and impact in a number of fields, including education, music, sport and literature.His philanthropy works includes the launch of a scholarship programme in 2018 at the University of Cambridge funding two Black British students per year covering both their tuition fees and maintenance costs.

Later in 2021, the programme was extended with joint support from the HSBC UK which agreed to fund a additional ten students per year.
So far, 55 students have been supported by a Stormzy Scholarship and 2025 will see the largest group graduate so far,” the statement said.

According to the Cambridge University, the ‘Stormzy effect’ has been a major contributor to an increase in applications to Cambridge from Black students across the UK.
Ceremony scheduled for June
Stormzy, along with seven other distinguished individuals has accepted the University Council’s nomination to receive an honorary doctorate which is subject to final approval by the Regent House, the University’s governing body.
The honourees are expected to be officially awarded their degrees during a special congregation at the Senate House on 25 June. The ceremony will be presided over by Cambridge Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deborah Prentice, and will be attended by university staff, students, alumni, and specially invited guests.
