Stranded Ghanaians to Pay between GH₵16,000 to 26,000 to Return Home

Stranded Ghanaians caught up in the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States of America (USA) will pay between GH₵ 15,530 to GH₵25,572 before they will return home.

A statement issued by the Consulate-General of Ghana in New York, USA with reference number CG/07/20 announced the evacuation of stranded Ghanaians from the area will take place on June 25, 2020.

According to the Ghanaian Embassy in the USA, the cost of flight which will be borne by the stranded persons will be $1,350 or GH₵7,830 for Economy Class and $2,840 or GH₵16,472 for those who would want to return in a Business Class.

The evacuees, the statement emphasized will also be made to bear the cost of a 14-day mandatory quarantine at either the Kempinski or African Regent Hotels.

“There will be a 14-Day mandatory quarantine upon arrival in Accra (with the possibility of extension to 21 days). The cost of the quarantine will be borne by the evacuee as per the attached selected hotels,” the statement said.

The Ghanaian government shut the borders of the country to the international community in March 2020 when the country recorded its first two cases of COVID-19 on March 12.

A lot of Ghanaians and other nationals’ resident here who were caught up as a result of the closure of the border became stranded in foreign lands.

Some civil society groups called on the Ghanaian government to put in place measures to evacuate stranded in various parts of the world.

Subsequently, the government brought in some stranded Ghanaians from Kuwait and subjected them to the mandatory 14-day quarantine out of which some tested positive for COVID-19.
