The docket of the case of the Editor of ModernGhana, Emmanuel Ajarfor Abugri, has strangely disappeared from the Court Registry.
Ajarfor filed a suit at the Human Rights Division of the High Court against the National Security Coordinator, Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General (AG) on July 11, 2019 at the Human Rights Court, alleging the violation of his rights to personal liberty, fair trial and human dignity, following his arrest by operatives of National Security on June 27, 2019.
The case, which was set for Tuesday December 10, 2019 could not be heard as the Court Registry claimed it could not trace or locate the docket.
A quick enquiry at the Court Registry reveals that the case was properly filed with all parties served to appear in court on the said day, however, the docket mysteriously vanished when the case was called.
Even though there was no representative from the AG and IGP office in court, Mr. Ajarfor and a representative from the National Security were present and seated in the Human Rights Court on Tuesday.
Mr Ajarfor was arrested on 27th June, 2019 from his office together with a reporter, Emmanuel Yeboah Britwum, over an opinion piece written by one Constance Kwabeng about the National Security Minister Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah, and the governing New Patriotic Party’s Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The opinion piece written by the anonymous writer, accused Albert Kan-Dapaah of plotting to takeover the NPP party whiles that of the Alexander Afenyo Markin was in relation to happenings at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
The two journalists were detained for two days before being released, however they alleged torture in the hands of the national security operatives. Few days later, the reporter, Emmanuel Yeboah Britwum, even though, told the media he was tortured, later backtracked, denying haven been tortured.
However, Mr. Ajarfor with the help of OneGhana Movement filed the case at the High Court seeking orders directed at the Attorney General to prosecute the officers alleged to have tortured him, the release of all seized items such as the two mobile phones, Huawei tablet and HP laptop back to him and compensation.
