In the 2024 electioneering campaign, strategic communication emerged as a critical factor in shaping public perception and influencing voter behavior. Ghana’s two major political parties—the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—both deployed a wide range of communication strategies to amplify their messages, effectively engaging with their respective support bases.

During a recent webinar organized by Africans Communicating Africa (ACA), communication experts analyzed the strategic messaging tools utilized by both parties. A key strength of both campaigns was the deployment of professionals, including lawyers and policy analysts, to the forefront of their communication efforts. This strategy allowed them to counter misinformation swiftly and maintain credible narratives, thereby enhancing trust among the electorate.

Communication professional Joyce Sackitey-Ahiadorme highlighted the strategic impact of selecting Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the NDC’s vice-presidential candidate. Despite initial criticisms regarding her age, the campaign successfully framed her experience and wisdom as assets, particularly among women and young voters. Meanwhile, the NPP’s campaign effectively leveraged its incumbency, emphasizing stability and ongoing national development.
