Stroke Association Support Network-Ghana launches Module to support Persons Leaving with Stroke
Stroke Association Support Network-Ghana (SASNET-Ghana) has launched a Module to Support Persons Living With Stroke in Ghana after Acute Treatment known as The Post Discharge Stroke Support (PDSS).
Stroke is a leading cause of death and adult disability worldwide. It is on record that health professionals have done excellent work to save the lives of stroke survivors in the acute stage, this is often bravely against the budget and resource challenges.
Stroke occurrence is on the rise in Ghana and around the world. There is still a long way to go before mankind could harness this terrible ailment. At the same time, it is a well-known fact that acute care is only part of the equation. Post Discharge, equally important is left to no solution until Post Discharge Stroke Support (PDSS).
It is also known widely that survivors are left to no support after they leave hospitals. This is an issue greatly compromising the effectiveness of stroke care around the world. It has even kept researches on stroke from moving forward.
It is for this that PDSS has been designed to close this gap. The new process is a result of global collaboration in-which that has SASNET as a participant. It is the first time, a well-structured post discharge process is being deployed around the world and Ghana is leading the way because with this support system.
How it works
By signing up survivors before they leave hospitals, SASNET team will be the trusted partner to stay in touch with survivors after they leave the hospital or health facility.
The handoff will be smooth as one does not need to buy additional equipment, nor does one need to divert precious time learning the new system. All that is needed is to encourage a survivor and care giver to sign up at https://care.sasnetghana.org before leaving hospitals.
President for SASNET Ghana, Chief Dr Ben S. Jabuni, said SASNET-GHANA will take over afterwards. He said SASNET will connect with each survivor and care giver individually. This means that Health professionals especially those working on stroke can now focus on stroke patients knowing there is a great partner taking care of them after discharge.
A Co-Founder and Executive Director of the National Stroke Support Service, Mr Ad Adams Ebenezer, has called on all hospitals, clinics, survivors, care givers, health professionals, and organizations to work with SASNET-Ghana to better improve the lives of persons living with stroke and to reduce the burden of stroke in Ghana. He made this remarks during the launch of the Post Discharge Stroke Support model (PDSS) on TV Africa on January 20, 2020.
He said the model is first in the world and aims to leave no survivor and care giver behind.
“Every survivor we add to the SASNET system is one precious move forward to beat stroke,” he stated.
